Hispanic Student Dental Association makes a difference

Hispanic Student Dental Association makes a difference In January, members of the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) volunteered for the St. John’s Migrant Information and Service Fair and provided free dental screenings for some of the 80 migrant workers onsite at a migrant camp in Spuds, Fla. Volunteering were D.M.D. students Sophia Resposo, Carla Kontax, Barbara Llanes, Diley Perez, and Luciana Shaddox, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., an assistant professor in Periodontology.

The next step, according to Shaddox, who serves as the group’s faculty advisor, is to identify a local clinic that will offer the treatment needed by the people screened. Of those screened that day, 11 showed signs of periodontal disease, and three needed urgent care.
